Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

I want to talk to you about something that’s really important: self-care. I know, I know, you’ve probably heard it a million times before, but hear me out. Self-care isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s one of the most selfless things you can do. By taking care of yourself and prioritizing your mental health, you’re actually doing a favor not only for yourself, but for those around you as well.

Think about it. Have you ever been around someone who is clearly stressed out and not taking care of themselves? Maybe they’re irritable, easily frustrated, and just not themselves. It’s not pleasant to be around, right? Now think about how you feel when you’re stressed out and not taking care of yourself. It’s not a great feeling, is it? When we neglect our own needs, it can have a ripple effect on our relationships and our ability to function in our daily lives.

But why do we feel guilty about taking care of ourselves? Why do we feel like we have to constantly be productive and put others’ needs before our own? I think it’s because we’ve been conditioned to believe that our worth is based on our productivity and how much we can do for others. But the truth is, we can’t pour from an empty cup. We have to take care of ourselves first in order to be able to show up fully for others.

So what does self-care actually look like? It can be different for everyone, but some examples include:

  • Taking a break when you need it. Whether that means taking a mental health day from work, or just taking a few minutes to breathe and collect yourself throughout the day.
  • Doing something that brings you joy. Whether that’s reading a book, going for a walk, or taking a dance class, make time for the things that light you up.
  • Setting boundaries. Saying no to things that don’t serve you, and being clear about your needs and expectations in your relationships.
  • Seeking support. Whether that means talking to a therapist, reaching out to a friend, or joining a support group, it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.

I know it can be hard to prioritize yourself, especially when there are so many demands on our time and energy. But trust me, taking care of yourself is worth it. You deserve to feel happy, healthy, and fulfilled. And when you take care of yourself, you’ll be better able to show up for the people and things that matter most to you.

So go ahead, take that bubble bath, schedule that therapy appointment, or whatever it is that you need to do to take care of yourself. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
